Our story
Born out of love for the bustling hawker scene of Malaysia and Singapore.
Rasa Sayang, Malay for “a feeling of love”, has been cooking on Macclesfield Street, in the heart of Chinatown, since 2008. Our halal offering is an authentic representation of Straits cuisine: its diverse culture, and its distinct tastes.
The myriad spices and ingredients in our kitchen reflect the region’s rich history: travellers, spice traders and merchants arriving from all over the world. We cook them the way the hawkers do: over a fierce wok, without fuss. The room is simple, the plates are generous, and the chilli is meant to be felt.

From chicken rice to chilli crab, the menu runs through the Straits canon: Singaporean and Malaysian classics, all halal, most of them finished over a roaring wok. Four to start with:
Hainanese Chicken Rice
Gently poached chicken, rice cooked in the broth, with ginger relish, dark soy and chilli on the side.
Singapore Chilli Crab
Whole crab in a rich, sweet-hot tomato and chilli gravy. Roll your sleeves up. It is meant to be messy.
Beef Rendang
Slow-cooked in coconut and lemongrass until the spices cling dark and dry to the beef.
Raffles Singapore Laksa
Noodles in a spiced coconut broth, hawker comfort in a bowl.
Nasi LemakCoconut rice with sambal, crisp anchovies, peanuts and egg.
